Hurricane season is less than 2 weeks away, with many people in Florida and Appalachia still recovering from the impacts of last year’s storms. But as Nicole Sganga reports, an internal review obtained by CBS News shows that FEMA is “not ready” for the June 1 start date. “As FEMA transforms to a smaller footprint, the intent for this hurricane season is not well understood, thus FEMA is not ready,” said a PowerPoint presentation dated May 12, which also said that much of the agency’s readiness process “has been derailed this year due to other activities like staffing and contracts.” The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees FEMA, told CBS News in a statement that the agency, however, is “fully activated in preparation for Hurricane Season.” Here’s what to know.
